What to know about vacuuming and carpet flooring

There is a right and wrong way to vacuum carpeting. Soft surfaces hold onto dust, crumbs, pet hair, and other undesirable substances more than other floors.

For rugs, the general rule is to vacuum twice a week. After that, have them professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, as your warranty requires.

Following is a checklist of our suggestions for keeping your carpets tip-top shape.

If you're considering buying a new vacuum

Be mindful that they aren't all the same. It might be good to check with the rug's manufacturer to see if they have suggestions for type or attachments.

Sometimes a vacuum may be great for a particular floor covering. However, it may not work as well for another.

Before you even begin to vacuum

Check the filters or bag. If full, empty it. Did you know you can lose 80% of cleaning power if the bag is full?
Also, inspect the rug before you begin. Look for small toys or coins that can get stuck and damage the carpet.

Sometimes you’ll need to remove beater bars

You'll find many styles at our carpet store, including shags and loops. Although great for some cut-piles, Beater bars can also fray, pull, and unravel others with long fibers or loops, so remove them.

The idea behind these rotating brushes is to churn and shake fibers. That loosens the dirt that gets embedded deep in the pile.
